Red Hot Chili Peppers are making their VMAs return for the first time in two decades.
The 8x VMAs winners are set to receive the Global Icon Award at the 2022 MTV VMAs next week, marking the first time the band will appear at the show since they performed in 2000 after receiving the prestigious Video Vanguard Award.
The Global Icon Award originally hails from MTV’s Europe Music Awards (“EMAs”) — it celebrates an artist or band whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape.
It’s a big year for Red Hot Chili Peppers, as the band scored its 29th nomination – and first since 2006 – looking to take home a win in “Best Rock” for “Black Summer,” the lead single off their platinum-selling chart-topping twelfth studio album, Unlimited Love. The honor adds to the already milestone year for the band, which includes two new studio albums, Unlimited Love and just-announced Return of the Dream Canteen and a critically and commercially-acclaimed global stadium tour.
To get fans excited for Red Hot Chili Peppers, MTV has the exclusive global video premiere of “Tippa My Tongue,” the lead single off Return of the Dream Canteen, also released today. You can watch the epic music video below.
The announcement comes off the heels of a previously announced star-studded list of performers at the VMAs this year, including Anitta, J Balvin, Marshmello x Khalid and Panic! At The Disco. Additionally, Kane Brown is set to headline the Toyota Stage and Nicki Minaj will perform live for the first time since 2018 when she receives the prestigious Video Vanguard Award.
Last month, the network announced its star-studded nominees, with Jack Harlow, Kendrick Lamar, and Lil Nas X leading the pack with seven nominations each, followed by Doja Cat and Harry Styles with six. Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd are also big nominees, as they are up for five Moon Person awards each. You can view the full list here. Fans can vote for their favorites across 22 gender-neutral categories by visiting vote.mtv.com through today, Friday, August 19th, thanks to Burger King®. Voting for “Best New Artist,” presented by EXTRA® Gum, remains active into show. Social Categories for “Group of the Year,” “Song of the Summer” and “Album of the Year” open tomorrow, August 20th on @MTV and @VMAs Instagram Stories.
Emceed by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow, the 2022 MTV VMAs will air LIVE from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on Sunday, August 28th @ 8PM ET/PT on MTV.
