Sela Campbell Talks Bringing Traditional Twang & Zero Patience for Nonsense to Her Debut EP “Lovin’ Made Me Mean” (Exclusive)

If you’ve been searching for the kind of artist who pairs the timeless storytelling of classic twang with the sharp, unfiltered attitude of Gen Z, we’ve found your girl — and her name is Sela Campbell.

Today (June 26), the 19-year-old Leesburg, Virginia native officially drops her highly anticipated debut EP, Lovin’ Made Me Mean, via Leo33. Written entirely by Campbell herself, the six-song project introduces a fearless new voice to the country scene — one shaped by heartbreak, sharpened by real-world experience, and entirely unafraid to say the quiet parts out loud.

Raised on traditional country legends like Waylon Jennings and Dolly Parton, Sela picked up a guitar at just five years old. That deep-rooted respect for the genre shines through her lyricism, but she gives it a modern edge that perfectly mirrors the highs and lows of being a teenager in 2026.

“I would describe my sound as one that your parents or grandparents may hear and immediately feel correlated with nostalgia,” Sela explains. “But my stories and lyrics, however, are showcasing the experiences young people are going through. I hope they can hear these songs and can relate.”

Before signing major deals with Leo33, CAA, and Warner Chappell Music, Sela was just a college freshman navigating her first real heartbreak. In fact, her swampy, hit-ready debut single “Diamond In Your Pocket” didn’t originate in a flashy Nashville writing room — yet became the blueprint for her artistic identity.

“I wrote this song during my first year of college,” Sela exclusively tells Celeb Secrets. “While I was at school, I wrote songs every free second I had. I would write at the desk under my lofted bed for hours and shoot off the recordings to my mom when they were finished.”

“It is the perfect storm of two things I am very passionate about: raw, honest storytelling and swampy country music,” she continues. “It was the epitome of what I wanted my sound to be.”

Sela’s raw honesty is already paying off in a massive way. She’s spent the year turning heads on the road opening for heavy-hitters like Carly Pearce and Kashus Culpepper, with more dates lined up for this fall alongside Ashley McBryde.

For Sela, the fast-paced rise to fame is thrilling, but it’s the quiet moments with fans after the stage lights go down that matter most. “It taught me that the real prize in this career and industry is somebody coming up to you after a show and saying, ‘This happened to me, and hearing you sing about it made me feel understood and seen.’”

Don’t let the fiery breakup anthems fool you, though. Sela insists she’s “actually very shy and sweet” in real life. “I just have zero patience for nonsense and disrespect,” she laughs.

With a powerhouse voice, a rock-and-roll edge, and some of the most authentic songwriting we’ve heard all year, Sela Campbell is a name you won’t be forgetting anytime soon. Celeb Secrets: What does it feel like to officially introduce yourself to the world with “Diamond In Your Pocket,” and why was this the right song to lead with?

Sela Campbell: “’Diamond In Your Pocket’ was the right song to lead with because it is the perfect storm of two things I am very passionate about: Raw, honest storytelling and swampy country music. When we started discussing what songs would go on my upcoming EP, it was our north star both lyrically and sonically. It was the epitome of what I wanted my sound to be.”

CS: You’ve shared that this song started as an iPhone demo in your dorm room. Take us back to that moment — did you know then that it would become your debut single?

SC: “At that time, I had no idea that ‘Diamond in Your Pocket’ would be my debut single, or that it would ever even get recorded. I wrote this song during my first year of college. While I was at school, I wrote songs every free second I had. I would write at the desk under my lofted bed for hours and shoot off the recordings to my mom when they were finished. She is always the person I send songs to first. Songwriting is therapeutic for me. It’s a way to get all my feelings out on paper and turn it into something meaningful. I didn’t write ‘Diamond in Your Pocket’ to get anything out of it; I wrote it because it was a lesson I’d learned and something I needed to hear.”

CS: You grew up on classic country legends like Waylon Jennings and Dolly Parton. How did that foundation shape the artist we’re hearing today?

SC: “Growing up on artists like Dolly and Waylon gave me a deep respect for storytelling. Their records weren’t just songs. They were honest, lived stories and experiences about the ups and downs in their lives. They taught me that the most powerful music comes from your personal truth. That being said, every song that I write is based on an experience of mine, a feeling I felt, or something I’ve seen firsthand, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

CS: At just 19, you’re blending tradition with a modern edge. How would you describe your sound to someone discovering you for the first time on streaming?

SC: “I would describe my sound as one that your parents or grandparents may hear and immediately feel correlated with nostalgia, but my stories and lyrics, however, are showcasing the experiences young people are going through. I hope they can hear these songs and can relate.”

CS: You’ve already been opening shows for artists like Carly Pearce and Kashus Culpepper. What have those road experiences taught you about connecting with a live audience?

SC: “It taught me that the real prize in this career and industry is somebody coming up to you after a show and saying, ‘This happened to me, and hearing you sing about it made me feel understood and seen.’ It made me understand that the best way to connect with people is by being authentically yourself.”

CS: Your debut EP is titled Lovin’ Made Me Mean. Without giving too much away, what does that title say about this chapter of your life?

SC: “I wrote all of the songs for this EP by myself in my bedroom, after I had gone through my first heartbreak. You’ll hear some pain and hurt in these songs, but more than anything, you’ll hear self-realization; the moment I stopped shrinking myself for someone who didn’t value me. I think that’s something everyone needs to hear, whether it comes from a romantic relationship or not.”

CS: What’s one thing about Sela Campbell that listeners might not expect after hearing this song?

SC: “I am actually very shy and sweet. I just have zero patience for nonsense and disrespect.”

CS: When you think about where you want to be a year from now, what does success look like for you?

SC: “A year from now, success to me looks like sharing my stories out on the road in new places and bigger stages. I think the biggest thing for me would be being able to look back and know that I stayed true to myself authentically through all of it, and that my stories, experiences, and hard work are what brought me success.”

CS: What can you tell us about what is coming up for you in the rest of the year?

SC: “The rest of the year you can expect to see me performing my EP songs out on the road, writing more songs, and recording new music.”

CS: Since we’re Celeb Secrets, what’s a secret (fun fact) either about you or your artistry that people would be surprised to know?

SC: “When I’m not listening to classic country, I am listening to 90’s grunge bands and metal. Alice in Chains is my favorite band of all time. Soundgarden, Korn, Pantera—you name it. It’s on my playlist.”
