Tennis Legend Roger Federer Announces His Retirement

Tennis star Roger Federer took to social media today (September 15) to announce that he would end his iconic 24-year-long career. His final competitive event will come next week in London at the Laver Cup, and after that, he will officially be done with competitive tennis for good.

The Switzerland native will look to end his career with a solid outing at the Laver Cup. Throughout his career, Federer has won six Australian Open titles, eight Wimbledon Open titles, five US Open titles, and a title at the French Open in 2009. Additionally, Federer spent a record 237 weeks in a row as the number one ranked player in the world. He also finished the year ranked as the number one player in the world five times. Federer also has the second most Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles titles with 103.

That resume speaks for itself in terms of showing Federer’s greatness on the court. Still, Federer’s impact goes beyond the court, as he inspired thousands of people over the years to want to play tennis and encouraged people to watch him play and become tennis fans. Federer is one of those beloved figures in sports that will forever be remembered beyond his playing days.

The Lavender Cup will occur at The O2 in London, England, from September 23rd to September 25th. If you want to watch Federer in action and can’t make it to London, tune into the Tennis Channel on September 23rd at 8 am ET.
