The Comeback Fins Do It Again as Miami Improves to 5-3 After 31-27 Victory Against the Lions

After an early 14-point deficit to begin their week eight matchup against the Detroit Lions, the Miami Dolphins pulled off another impressive come-from-behind win. Led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the top wide receiver duo in the NFL in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, Miami defeated the Lions 31-27 to pick up their second win in a row to improve to 5-3 on the year.

It was a slow start to begin the game for the Dolphins as Detroit would take an early 14-0 lead to begin the contest; with their first touchdown coming in a drive in which they marched right down the field through the Dolphins defense; however, the second scoring drive of the game for the Lions came as a result of a fumble by Miami rookie wideout Braylon Sanders who fumbled in his first official NFL snap, Detroit would recover in their 20-yard line and thus score a couple plays later on a 7-yard pass from quarterback Jared Goff to running back D’Andre Swift.

The Dolphins offense would answer back with their first touchdown of the game and never look back as they would score a touchdown in four of their next seven drives.

The Dolphins offense was led by Tagovailoa, who had a historic outing for Miami as he became the first quarterback in Miami Dolphins history to throw for at least 350 yards, three touchdowns, zero interceptions, and have at least an 80% completion percentage.

Two of Tagovailoa’s touchdowns were thrown to Jaylen Waddle, who had a massively productive day as he would finish the week eight matchup with eight receptions for 106 yards and the two touchdowns; joining the “penguin” in the receiving game was Tyreek Hill, who had another electrifying performance in a Miami Dolphins uniform; the “cheetah” finished the game with 12 receptions for 188 yards. Hill and Waddle joined Tagovailoa in the history-making department as the Miami superstar wideouts broke the NFL record for the most receiving yards by a pair of teammates in the first eight games of a season.

Tagovailoa’s final touchdown on the day went to superstar tight end Mike Gesicki on an 11-yard dime to give Miami the 31-27 lead.

As for Miami’s defense on the day, although it was a mighty struggle for them to stop Detroit’s offense in the first half by allowing 27 points; the unit was able to regroup at the break and come back strong as they completely shutout the Lions in the second half of the game.

Something of note here is that Dolphins defensive lineman Zach Sieler batted down two of Jared Goff’s passes which is very impressive because, coming into the game, only one of Goff’s passes had been batted down this season. Sieler also sacked Goff at a crucial point in the contest.

This victory for Miami showed resiliency, and much credit must be given to Mike McDaniel and his staff, as they have done a phenomenal job so far in McDaniel’s first season as a head coach.

As for the Lions, blowing an early lead is nothing new; unfortunately, they have had early leads in many games throughout Dan Campbell’s tenure as their head coach. Somehow and someway, they must figure out a way to close these ballgames out, but with that being said, something you can always say about the Lions is that they give it their all and play hard to the very end.

Detroit will look to get back to the winning side of things in week nine as they play host to Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.

As for the Dolphins, they will look to pick up another win against an NFC North opponent as they travel to Soldier Field in week nine to take on Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears.
