The Met Gala 2021 Announces Return Dates and Theme

The Met Gala is back and this time it’ll be a two-parter!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced today that the annual fashion and celebrity extravaganza will return in person both in September this year and on its annual date of the first Monday of May next year – its theme? American fashion.

The Met Gala is held to celebrate a new exhibition that the museum is opening and usually serves as a fundraising event for the Costume Institute, and this year is no different. The galas will launch a two-part exhibition that will revolve around American fashion, titled In America: A Lexicon of Fashion and In America: An Anthology of Fashion.

“Over the past year, because of the pandemic, the connections to our homes have become more emotional, as have those to our clothes. For American fashion, this has meant an increased emphasis on sentiment over practicality,” Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, shared in a statement.

“Responding to this shift, Part One of the exhibition will establish a modern vocabulary of American fashion based on the expressive qualities of clothing as well as deeper associations with issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Part Two will further investigate the evolving language of American fashion through a series of collaborations with American film directors who will visualize the unfinished stories inherent in The Met’s period rooms.”

The first part will open on Sept. 18, just in time to celebrate the Costume Institute’s 75th anniversary, and the second part will open on May 5, both will stay up for viewing until Sept. 5, 2022.

The September gala will be much smaller and will be following government Coronavirus guidelines, but the May gala is intended to be larger and match those previously held before the pandemic occurred.

Although there hasn’t been any word as to who the celebrity hosts, or chairs, would be for the galas, we wouldn’t be surprised if they recruited some of the biggest names in music right now, such as Megan Thee Stallion or Billie Eilish.
