Just weeks after winning the 2022 MLB World Series, the Houston Astros made a splash in free agency by adding longtime Chicago White Sox star first baseman Jose Abreu; with this signing, the reigning champs have elevated themselves to another level in their upcoming quest of capturing another World Series title in the 2023 season.

Abreu signed with the White Sox in 2013 after escaping from the despicable communism in Cuba and making it to the land of the free. Abreu showed flashes of stardom from day one as he ended his rookie season with 36 home runs, a White Sox franchise record for home runs in a season by a rookie. Abreu also ended his rookie campaign with the 2014 AL Rookie of the Year award and earned the American League Silver Slugger Award while also being named an all-star.
Throughout his career, Abreu has had two more all-star appearances and was named the American League MVP in 2020.
With Abreu spending the first nine seasons of his career in a White Sox uniform, it feels like the end of an era as the Cuban-born slugger will spend the foreseeable future with the Houston Astros; Abreu’s contract with the champs is worth $58.5 million for three years.
With this move, the Astros sent a message to the rest of the league that they are not content with just one championship and are doing what they can to improve their team and continue to be perennial contenders.
