The One-Seeded Chiefs Set to Host the Four-Seeded Jaguars in Game One of the 2023 Divisional Round

In his first four seasons as an NFL starting quarterback, Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes has reached at least the AFC Championship. With that said, Mahomes and the Chiefs have a chance to keep that streak alive as they welcome in the Jacksonville Jaguars for an AFC divisional round game on Saturday, January 21, at 4:30pm ET.

As for Trevor Lawrence, Doug Pederson, and the Jags, the team from Duval will look to spoil Mahomes’ historic streak. Just a week after their historic comeback against the Los Angeles Chargers, in which they pulled off the third biggest comeback in NFL history, Jacksonville will look to show the world that they belong and look to knock out another team from the playoffs.

When you look at both of these teams, some keys to watch for will be Jacksonville’s effectiveness in running the ball and Kansas City’s ability to protect Mahomes from Jacksonville’s efficient pass rush that includes Josh Allen, Travon Walker, and Roy Robertson-Harris.

With that said, Jacksonville ran efficiently in their wild-card matchup against the Chargers as Travis Etienne ran for over 100 yards in his playoff debut.

As for the Chiefs pass protection, they have arguably the best o-line in all of football with a group that consists of three Pro-Bowl players in Creed Humphrey, Orlando Brown, and Joe Thuney, followed by a soon-to-be Pro Bowler in Trey Smith and vastly improved veteran Andrew Wylie. With that information out of the way and as good as that Chiefs group has been, it’s about this game; nothing that they have done this season matters as of now if they cannot significantly protect their quarterback in this upcoming playoff showdown.

As for Etienne and the Jags running game, Doug Pederson will most likely be extra creative due to his prior experience of working with KC head man Andy Reid and something else to mention is that veteran tailback JaMycal Hasty may have a more prominent role in this game than in their previous matchup against the Chargers.

As for some predictions, we believe the Jaguars will defeat the Chiefs 38-35. We also believe Trevor Lawrence and Patrick Mahomes will throw for at least three touchdowns.
