The San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks kicked off the 2023 NFL playoffs live from San Francisco on Saturday (January 14).
It was a close game to start the game, which surprised many watching worldwide as the Seahawks had a 17-point second quarter that led to them having a 17-16 lead at halftime. With that said, the Niners would bounce back and regroup in the second half as they would outscore Seattle 25-6.
The final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Brock Purdy ended his first career playoff game by throwing three touchdowns and rushing for another while throwing for 332 yards and having no turnovers. As for veteran quarterback Geno Smith of the Seahawks, Seattle’s single-season passing yards leader finished with 253 yards passing and two passing touchdowns, along with an interception and a fumble.
In the running game, Niners superstar back Christian McCaffrey went off as he ran fifteen times for 119 yards and a receiving touchdown. As for the Seahawks, rookie running back Kenneth Walker III ran fifteen times for 63 yards and a score in his first career playoff appearance.
The standouts in the receiving game were D.K. Metcalf and Deebo Samuel; Metcalf caught two touchdowns to go along with ten receptions for 136 yards, while Samuel finished with six catches for 133 yards and a score.
The sack leader in this NFC West playoff division showdown was 49ers pass rusher Charles Omenihu with two sacks; joining Omenihu in the sack department was his teammate Arik Armstead and his opponent, Bruce Irvin.
The 49ers will now await the result of the final wild-card game on Monday Night Football between the Dallas Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to find out who their next opponent is. The Seahawks will now decide whether to give Geno Smith a contract extension, as Smith will most likely win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.
The 49ers took over this game in the second half, and they never looked back with a 41-23 to advance into the next round of the playoffs.
