Team USA will be competing for the gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics!
On Thursday (August 5), Team USA played a triumphant game against Australia in the basketball semifinals. During the first half, the U.S. trailed by 15 points — projecting that Australia could win it all. However, in a turn of events, the U.S. came back stronger than ever for the second half.
Superstar players Kevin Durant and Jrue Holiday led the way to the team’s approaching victory. As Australia continued to fight, Devin Booker fought back and scored 10 points in the third quarter. By the last ten minutes of the game, the U.S. had a 19-point lead. The team’s strong defense earned them a well-deserved win with a score of 97-78.
Similar to the quarterfinals game, Durant came out on top scoring 23 points for the U.S. On how the team snagged the win, he said, “There were a lot of guys on this team that had straight faces and were ready to play when we were down 15 [points], strong faces is what Pop said. They came out and hit us with a nice haymaker, and we were able to get back up and get that lead back.”
The emotion. We are back to defend gold.

Despite the loss, Australia will be going for the bronze against Slovenia on Saturday (August 7). Slovenia was on the verge of winning the semifinal, but they eventually lost to France with a score of 90-89. Regardless, the fight for bronze is a win within itself considering that this is the Slovenian basketball team’s first time at the Olympics.
After carrying the team to the games, Dallas Mavericks and Slovenian player Luka Doncic is not ready to let his guard down just yet. Doncic said, “We’re not going to give up yet. One more final to go. That’s what we came here for.”
Team USA will play against France for the gold on Friday (August 6).
