Waitress the Musical is coming back to Broadway!
On Wednesday (July 7), it was announced that the Tony-nominated musical would be returning to the stage for a limited engagement at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre from September 2, 2021 to January 9, 2022. Sara Bareilles, composer and former lead of the show, will be reprising her role as Jenna Hunterson. Additional cast details have not yet been announced.
According to Broadway Buzz, Bareilles opened up about her decision to return to the show. “I couldn’t miss the opportunity to be there when Broadway welcomes audiences back into theaters that have been sitting dark for over a year,” she said. “It is a gift to get to revisit the beautiful story of Waitress, centered around hope, resilience, and the support of our chosen family.”
The musical wrapped its run on Broadway back in January 2020 — months before the pandemic hit and Broadway shut down indefinitely. Bareilles expressed her excitement for those who get to be back on stage again. She said, “Broadway is grit and grace, magic and mayhem, and I can’t wait to feel the electricity that pulses through all of us as the curtains rise once again.”
Waitress is based on the 2007 film of the same name starring Keri Russell. The story follows a waitress and baker named Jenna Hunterson as she navigates her way out of an abusive relationship and manages to rediscover the joys of life. The musical premiered on Broadway on April 24, 2016.
