Whitney Woerz is letting you know that you’re not alone when it comes to depression and anxiety.
The budding singer/songwriter’s newest single “Retrograde,” which she says “describes what it feels like to go through a negative spot in your life,” was written at a time when her own life went down before the nationwide stay-at-home order due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The whimsical track is something we all need during these difficult times, as it reminds us that there is light at the end of the tunnel — or in this case, the retrograde.
“I wrote [‘Retrograde’] in February during our first retrograde of the year and right before the Coronavirus. That was an insane time — obviously because of the retrograde and everything going on,” she says. “My life went down and I was kind of sad. The lyrics are literally just what my interpretation of what a retrograde feels like and people have related. They said it’s exactly how they are feeling during a bad time and I wanted people to relate to the fact that everybody feels down.”
Letting out jazz-y runs, hypnotic hooks, and an unfiltered operatic scream from the gut, “Retrograde” follows her previously released “Weirdoes” and “Ghost Story,” a song that was written by Whitney after an online chat in which friend admitted to suicidal intent. Citing the song as “one of the most significant moments of my life, because my friend said it saved her life,” the track took on a life of its own as an anthem of encouragement and empowerment.
After racking up millions of playbacks on her relatable tracks, Whitney decided to use her platform for good and raise awareness for mental health by becoming an ambassador for Glenn Close’s charity Bring Change 2 Mind.
“As someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety for years and has seen the light at the end of the tunnel, i want people to feel like they are not alone. i’ve been working with BC2M since i was 13 and we wanna let you know everything happens for a reason, you are not alone, you’re always being guided, and there’s always light at the end of a dark path.”
Celeb Secrets sits down with Whitney to learn more about her song “Retrograde,” the impact her songs have on her fans, and why she feels that its so important to bring awareness to mental health, whether it be through her music or through Close’s charity Bring Change 2 Mind.
