On May 23, 2021, Lady Gaga was awarded the keys to West Hollywood by Mayor Lindsey P. Horvath. Los Angles has officially marked May 23 as “Born This Way” Day, in honor of the 10 year anniversary of her groundbreaking album, Born This Way.
“Thank you for encouraging us to love ourselves and be proud,” says Mayor Horvath as she handed Gaga the massive key.
In tribute to the LGBTQIA+ community, her album Born This Way title was painted in pride colors for the event on Robertson Boulevard.
“I’ll honor this and I’ll treasure this, and I promise I’ll always be here for this day,” says Lady Gaga in a touching speech. “I will be here on this day to celebrate with you, to feel joy with you, to cry with you, to laugh with you because you know what we are? We’re poets, and we’re just talking to each other. I love you, let’s have a good time!”
With her album released over a decade ago, it still has a positive and powerful impact that it had 10 years ago. With the album debuting at No.1 on the Billboard 200 chart, as well as having 1,108,000 album copies sold within the first week and 10.49 album copies sold worldwide – Gaga has paved the way for many people to embrace who they are.
“Born this way, my song and album were inspired by Carl Bean, a gay black religious activist who preached, sung and wrote about being “Born This Way,” Notably his work was in 1975, 11 years before I was born,” shares the Icon on Twitter while also revealing inspiring photos from the special event.
