Musical fans, get ready to be excited because they just announced that the film, Wicked, will be released in two parts!
Film director, Jon M. Chu made the announcement on social media today (April 26). Chu explained the reason behind releasing the film in two parts saying, “…as we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into a single film without doing some damage.” Chu continued to explain that the story didn’t feel right with some of the songs and storyline being cut out. This ultimately led the director to decide to give both the musical and film, Wicked, justice with the release of two parts.

Ariana Grande (Glinda) and costar Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) both shared the statement on their social media. Grande captioned her post, “some thrillifying news 🙂 #WickedMovie”. The film will be an adaptation to the hit Broadway Wicked musical which tells the prequel of the story before Dorothy’s trip to Oz. The storyline follows the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) and Glinda the Good Witch’s friendship and the change that resulted in them becoming enemies.
Fans will be able to catch the first Wicked film when it is released in theaters on December 25, 2024. The second part of the film will be released exactly one year later, on December 25, 2025.
