With its win for “Best International Feature” at the Academy Awards this weekend – and director Thomas Vinterberg’s emotional acceptance speech – it was only a matter of time before Hollywood got its hands on the rights for Danish film Another Round.
Deadline reported that Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson’s Appian Way, Endeavor Content, and Makeready have secured the English-language remake rights to the film. Additionally, Endeavor Content and Makeready will fully fund the project.
It is also being reported that DiCaprio will star in the lead role played by Mads Mikkelsen in the Danish version.
Mikkelsen’s Martin is a middle-aged high school history teacher that has fallen into a slump with life and work. Along with three friends who also work at the school, they start a social project to have their blood alcohol content level constantly be above 0.05.
If he does star, this will be a new type of role for the ever-adapting DiCaprio. While he has sailed on the Titanic, been a stockbroker on Wall Street, and soared in the sky as Howard Hughes, DiCaprio has yet to play a high school teacher (except shortly in Catch Me if You Can).
DiCaprio was most recently seen in his 2015 Oscar-winning role in The Revenant and in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He recently finished filming Netflix’s Don’t Look Up with an all-star cast including Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Timothée Chalamet, and Ariana Grande and is currently filming Killers of the Flower Moon, which will be his seventh collaboration with director Martin Scorsese.
Vinterberg is also reported to be producing the remake. No other details of filming or a target release date have been announced at this time.
