Shortly before the MLB Lockout was lifted, Yankees’ third baseman and utility player Miguel Andújar was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint.
The incident occurred in the player’s homeland, the Dominican Republic, on his farm in San Cristóbal. On Wednesday, March 9, two armed men approached and beat Andújar, stealing his $7,000 watch. Three shots were also fired which resulted in a relative of Andújar’s, who was also at the incident, being hit in the finger.
The robbers also stole Andújar’s father’s SUV, though they abandoned it shortly after for unknown reasons, and it was found by police. According to the Dominican newspaper Listin Diablo, at least ten individuals are under investigation in relation to the incident.
Thankfully, nobody was seriously hurt. The incident occurred one day before the Major League Baseball lockout was lifted, and since that time, Andújar is scheduled to fly to Tampa, Florida tomorrow to begin Yankees’ Spring Training protocols.
According to Newsday’s Erik Boland, Andújar has stated that he is “Ok”. However, the Yankees declined to comment on this incident.
Source says Miguel Andujar was indeed robbed by three gunmen in the DR. But source also says Andujar is doing Ok and is scheduled to arrive in Tampa tomorrow.
