Alec Baldwin‘s new legal filing from today (March 11) revealed shocking new details about the Rust incident.
According to Variety, who retained the documents, Baldwin made an attempt to create a settlement with the widower of late cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. This would have allowed the film to continue production.
In the filing, Baldwin had two calls with the widower, Matthew Hutchins.
In the first call on Jan. 4th, the 63-year-old proposed the settlement where he explained that some of the profits from the movie as well as insurance proceeds would go to the Hutchins family. Hutchins was not as open to the idea when the two shared a second call on Jan. 26th, and it was on Feb. 15th Hutchins filed the wrongful death suit.
The outlet also reports that in the new filings, the actor is trying to put the liability for all legal claims on producer, Ryan Smith, as well as the production company, Rust Move Productions LLC. This would require the two to pay for all of Baldwin’s legal defense fees.
The filing did describe in detail Baldwin’s account of what occurred that tragic day. Saying, “Baldwin asked Hutchins whether she wanted to see him cock the gun, as the script required. She responded yes. Baldwin tipped the gun down somewhat so that the lens of the camera would be able to focus on his hand’s action, Baldwin asked Hutchins, ‘Am I holding it too far down?’ and ‘Do you see that?’ Hutchins responded that she could see Baldwin’s actions from her angle. Baldwin the pulled back the hammer, but not far enough to actually cock the gun. When Baldwin let go of the hammer the gun went off.”
Hutchins’ lawyer, Brian Panish, responded to the filing saying, “It is shameful that Baldwin claims Hutchins’ actions in filing a wrongful death lawsuit derailed the completion of ‘Rust’. The only action that ended the film’s production was Baldwin’s killing of Halyna Hutchins.”
