On Sunday, December 18, 2022, Lionel Messi and the Argentina soccer team defeated France 4-2 on penalties to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
It was a World Cup final full of many historical moments, such as France’s Kylian Mbappe accomplishing the first World Cup final hat-trick since 1966 and Messi adding the final puzzle piece to one of the most remarkable careers in the history of the sport.
Both Mbappe and Messi are highly beloved figures in the soccer universe, as Messi is arguably the greatest player of all time, while Mbappe is arguably the best young player in the game — as an example for fans of other sports, it’s kind of like watching LeBron James and Michael Jordan face off in the NBA Finals.
With that said, it was definitely worth the hype as Messi scored Argentina’s third goal of the game to give his team a 3-2 lead. Then, Mbappe answered back with a goal of his own on a penalty shot to tie the game at 3. That game-tying goal was Mbappe’s third goal, making him the first player since England’s Sir Geoff Hurst in the 1966 World Cup Final to accomplish the incredible feat.
Argentina took a commanding 2-0 lead early in this one, with many wondering if France could not keep up with them; however, France did answer back in the second half of the contest to tie it up, and of course, as previously mentioned, Messi’s lone goal gave Argentina a 3-2 lead, followed by Mbappe’s penalty kick tying the game at 3.
After multiple goals by each team to begin the PK round, France would come up short on back-to-back attempts, and Gonzalo Montiel would wind up securing the championship for the Argentinians.
