After over two years of being in a committed relationship with her boyfriend Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello opens up about how much they’ve helped each other grow.
The 24-year-old has had a very successful and busy year so far, as she’s released new music, performed at the 2021 MTV VMAs, New York’s Global Citizen Festival and Billboard Latin Music Awards, and made her Met Gala debut. While these achieving these milestones are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, there’s a lot of stress that happens behind-the-scenes, making Cabello’s struggle with mental health harder than ever.
Between working all the time to having to deal with things like paparazzi, the Cinderella star admitted to Glamour Magazine that she’s never had the time to ask herself if she was even happy or if she felt healthy while working. She later turned to therapy, which was able to help destress while getting herself back in a positive mental state.
“I found I was able to apply what they said in a way that benefited my mental health,” Cabello told Glamour.
The “Don’t Go Yet” singer also shared that Shawn also goes to therapy, which allows the power couple to be closer than ever.
“For better, for worse, we’re very transparent with each other. I think that’s why we can trust each other so much, because it’s a very 3D human relationship,” she explained. “I’ll be venting or ranting about something, and he’ll be like, ‘Have you talked to X about it?’ And I’ll be like, ‘No. I’ve got to do a session.’ And he’ll do the same thing to me. I think even just the language of being like, ‘Hey, I’m sorry that I’ve been distant with you or snappy with you. I’m just struggling and I’m feeling kind of anxious.’ That level of transparency really helps a lot.”
Cabello also opened up about her eating habits and how she can go down a bad path when anxious.
“I have this pattern of eating a lot when I’m anxious or uncomfortable,” she said. “It’s a comfort thing for me. I’ll just kind of become unconscious and zombie-eat a lot, and then I’ll feel sick. I’ve told Shawn about that. So at the VMAs party, I was like, ‘I’m doing it.’ And he was like, ‘It’s okay. You’re doing it. That’s okay. Let’s just take a breath and not do that.’ It’s really good for me to be able to talk about my patterns with someone.”
Back in June, Shawn appeared on the Man Enough podcast to open up about his relationship with Camila and how it’s sometimes not always perfect.
The “Wonder” singer talked about a recent argument the couple shared and how it brought out his biggest fear.
“I raised my voice at her and she was like, ‘I don’t like it when you raise your voice. Why did you raise your voice?’ And I got so defensive,” he said. “I was like, ‘I wasn’t raising my voice at you!’ And I did raise my voice at her. And I felt her shrink and I felt me grow and I was like, ‘Oh god, this is the worst.’ I’m so terrified of being evil. I’m so scared to be bad.”
Mendes then explained his fear of “being evil” and that if “there even is bad inside of me, and [I] have to just accept that that exists.”
“And that other part of me, he’s just got to be here and we’ve just got to work together until eventually he gets worked in all of the trauma and all of the kinks get rubbed out of him and he’s OK. But I can’t avoid the fact that there’s a little bit of darkness inside of me and letting that darkness kind of be present is a horrible feeling,” Mendes shared.
