Chris Hemsworth Wants To Make “Gladiator” Sequel (Report)

Thor: Love and Thunder hit theaters nearly a week ago, and it features both Russell Crowe and, of course, Chris Hemsworth, together with a few other well-known names including Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, and Tessa Thompson.

We see Thor return to his previous glory as he works to deal with Gorr the God Butcher (Bale). Thor isn’t the only God in the movie available for butchering, however. Several new Gods will make an appearance – and not all of them are from Norse mythology, as proven by the existence of Russell Crowe’s character, Zeus.

And if you thought that Zeus looks a bit gladiator-like in the trailer, you’re not wrong.

In an interview with Disney, Hemsworth mentioned, “I never thought I’d see the day where Russell would appear on screen with hints at ‘Gladiator’ imagery, yet with a wink—totally self-deprecating. He didn’t hold back. I’m such a fan. I have been since I first started acting.”

Gladiator, the 2000 movie, is one of the (many) blockbusters Russell Crowe has acted in. On top of this, the movie could get a revamp if Hemsworth gets his way.

With plenty of time to chat on set, it seems that Hemsworth has pitched the idea to Crowe about reviving the Gladiator movie either as a remake, a sequel, or something else. Obviously, we wouldn’t be seeing Crowe’s young Maximus character, but it’s much more plausible to expect his son.

A source near the two actors has commented, “Russell thinks [Chris] could be the only man to credibly play his son in a Gladiator sequel.”

According to the same source, the two are “carefully considering the concept” for the Gladiator sequel and have already “spent hours musing over script ideas.”

It also seems that Ridley Scott has the script written, according to Small Screen. Fans of the original movie have been waiting for years (decades, even) with only games and other media featuring the character to keep them busy in the meantime, so it’s understandable that there’s a lot of excitement behind a possible sequel.

Both the Thor and Gladiator films have characters that are hugely popular because they traded an already accepted imagery. Games such as Ryse: Son of Rome (via Steam or Xbox One) have done a great job of incorporating gladiators and the history behind them into a memorable experience.

There are also themed jackpot slots from Gala Casino based around both characters; namely, Gladiator, which uses the branding from the 300 film, and Norse Legends with a Thor character featured centrally. Neither Crowe nor Hemsworth feature in either, but the latter is playable on Thor: God of Thunder (on the PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, and Nintendo DS). The inclusion of Gladiators and Thor in popular culture underlines the importance of both actors, and to see them side-by-side in a Thor movie and the possible new Gladiator movie would surely thrill cinemagoers the world over.

Apart from the new Thor movie and the possible Gladiator sequel, the two actors have other projects ongoing as well. Crowe is working on Ark: The Animated Series, which should be released later this year. Hemsworth has a few titles in the works as well – The Washington Post reports that he’s working on Furiosa and Extraction 2.
