Christina Aguilera will add yet another piece of hardware to her trophy case this month, as she’s being honored at the 2022 Billboard Latin Music Awards with the “Billboard Spirit of Hope Award.” The artist will also perform during the live show when it airs from the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, FL on September 29.
Aguilera’s Latin background comes from her father, Fausto Xavier Aguilera, who was born in Ecuador. Christina and her father have had a rocky relationship over the years, with Christina bringing up claims of abuse at home growing up from her father. The two have not seen each other since 1999.
That said, Christina has still embraced her Latin side and has had much success on the Latin Billboard charts, including having her debut Spanish language album, “Mi Reflejo”, on top of the charts for 19 weeks. The “Feel This Moment” singer has also succeeded in the award show, including winning the 2001 Best Female Pop Vocal Album with “Mi Reflejo.”
Each year, the Billboard Spirit of Hope Award is given to an artist who uses their platform for more than just singing. Aguilera has been a long-time advocate of domestic violence as she has given millions of dollars to organizations over the years to help domestic violence survivors; as previously mentioned, Aguilera has talked about growing up in an abusive household, specifically with her father, who abused her, her sister, and her mother. Aguilera has also been a long-time supporter of malnourished children; she has helped raise over $150 million to support these children over the years.
With all of these great acts of kindness towards others, Aguilera deserves such an honor created in memory of the late great Mexican icon, Selena.
