The moment for Devin Kennedy to show the world who he is as an artist has finally come, as his debut record California Rain is officially out on all music streaming platforms.
The 8-track project paints a perfect picture of what Devin’s signature sound is, which can best be described as a blend of lo-fi beats with an R&B-laced pop sound.
“I’m so excited for everybody to hear [‘California Rain’],” Devin tells Celeb Secrets in an exclusive interview in Los Angeles. “I’m from California, so the fact that the title track is called ‘California Rain’ just felt like the right thing to do for this album. It’s a fusion of R&B with jazz and pop, blending all the musical things that I love.”
Influenced by artists like Paul McCartney and John Mayer, California Rain makes the budding artist a one to watch in the music industry, as it shows his versatility and fluidity, making you hungry for more genre-bending earworms from the minute you hear the project’s first track “Walk In The Park.”
When asked about the project’s overall message, Kennedy relates it to its title, California rain.
“You never really get enough of [California rain]. It’s elusive and you’re always kind of waiting for the next time it comes. I think love can be that way too, and that’s kind of the story I’m telling from this record. I want everybody to find their own story in this album, so I think it will leave everybody wanting more and more,” he says.
“I hope everybody can just find their own soundtrack, and that’s really the intention with writing the songs. They’re not really my songs anymore, they’re for everybody else. I hope everybody can craft their own story around the songs,” he concluded.
While every song has a special meaning to Devin, he tells Celeb Secrets that his current favorite is “Frequent Flyer.” The dreamy track — which is bound to be one of this summer’s favorite slow jams — is all about living a carefree and fun lifestyle while embracing the current moment.
“I grew up on slow jam guitar music, so I wanted to take that world and make it a little more fun and exciting than it is sometimes,” Kennedy says of the song’s genesis. “I melded those worlds into one song and I love it so much.”
The music video for “Frequent Flyer” has just as much meaning as the song to the budding artist, as he said he was absolutely “blessed” to be given the opportunity to film its dynamic visual inside an abandoned airplane.
“We had this crazy idea to film inside of a plane. I didn’t know how we were gonna make it work, but the team and the director on the shoot made it happen,” he says.
“It’s one of my favorite videos… it was our plane for the day, so it was almost like flying private,” he joked. “No, we couldn’t get off the ground, but it was super fun experience with incredible people.”
As for what’s next, Devin says that he will continue to work on new music daily while trying to find a balance to live a little more life.
“I want to make sure my priorities are set straight up. I tend to work a lot and not do a lot of anything else, so I plan to rebalance myself this year and do a little more living of life,” he says. “I’ve got a lot of family nearby, so it’s making sure that I keep that a priority, along with seeing friends and going outside while making music. It’s very important.”
