Lil Nas X has a new fan, and its none other than country queen Dolly Parton.
On September 21, the 22-year-old rapper and singer released his cover of the hit song “Jolene” during his BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge segment. Just a few days later, the OG “Jolene” songstress posted an official statement about his cover on her socials with a rave review.
“I was so excited when someone told me that Lil Nas X had done my song ‘Jolene,’” Parton wrote. “I had to find it and listen to it immediately…and it’s really, really good. Of course, I love him anyway. I was surprised and I’m honored and flattered. I hope he does good for both of us. Thank you @lilnasx“.

Nas responded later on — clearly in shock — by quote tweeting “HOLY SH–.”

Although both Parton and Nas loved the final result of the cover, Nas explained on Andy Cohen Live that “Jolene” wasn’t the original cover song. “We originally were going to do a Nirvana song,” Nas said. “Then we were kind of goofing around and you know, like doing ‘Jolene,’ it was like, wait a minute. What if we actually did ‘Jolene?'”
The duo have known each other for quite some time now, Parton even revealed in an interview with Elle in 2019 that she was almost a part of Nas’s hit song “Old Town Road” remix.
“I had an opportunity to be part of that [song],” Parton explained. “But it had done so well with so many people. I thought, ‘Well, I’ll wait and do something later on. No point in going down that same ‘Old Town Road.’ We got other roads to travel.’”
