Drake once again broke the Internet on Monday (August 30) when he took to social media to share that after many months of waiting, the rapper’s sixth studio album — Certified Lover Boy — was arriving this Friday, September 3rd.
The original drop date was set for January 2021, until the artist began to experience some health issues. “I was planning to release my album this month but between surgery and rehab my energy has been dedicated to recovery,” he wrote on his Instagram Stories earlier this year. “I’m blessed to be back on my feet and feeling great and focused on the album, but CLB won’t be dropping in January.” You can read more about Drake’s album delay from when we covered it back in January here.

Before sharing the news on his Instagram page, the 34-year-old rapper teased the project’s release by sharing a cardboard cutout on the screen that read “CLB September 3rd” during an episode of ESPN’s SportsCenter. The sports network was quick to send out an apology hinting at commercial, tweeting “we had some technical difficulties that have since been resolved.”

The supposed drop of Certified Lover Boy is set to cause some controversy, as it comes just shy of a week that Kayne West released his 10th studio-album, Donda, which broke records for being one of the most-streamed albums of all-time within a 24 hour time period. While there’s no official beef between Champagne Papi and Ye, it looks like the battle of hip-hop royalty will commence after CLB hits the shelves.
No tracklist has been confirmed for CLB, however, it is rumored that Lil Durk will be featured on the album’s lead single, “Laugh Now, Cry Later.” No other artists have yet to be confirmed for a collaboration.
Certified Lover Boy marks the Canadian rapper’s first full-length project since the release of his album, Scorpion in 2018 and Dark Lane Demo Tapes and the EP Scary Hours 2 both released in March of 2020.
