Girl Ultra ‘Enjoyed Seeing New Faces and New Reactions to Her Music’ During her Performance at This Ain’t No Picnic Music Festival (Exclusive)

Girl Ultra brought the house DOWN at This Ain’t No Picnic!

For those who dont’ know, This Ain’t No Picnic is a brand new Goldenvoice festival that took place this past weekend in Los Angeles, and Celeb Secrets had the incredible opportunity to attend. We were able to see performances by some of our all-time favorite artists, including The Strokes, Phoebe Bridgers, Mac DeMarco, Jorja Smith, Le Tigre, Wet Leg and more, and we seriously had the best time.

While talented artists spanned six different stages at Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California this past weekend, we got an exclusive look into Girl Ultra’s performance that took place at 2:30 PM on Sunday (August 28th) at the Fairway Stage.

Celeb Secrets had the opportunity to chat with the incredible Latina artist just hours after she finished her performance, where gave us an inside look into her experience at the festival.

“It was very fun! It’s always very nice to come back to California and play with my friends and sing in both Español and English,” she shared about her performance at This Ain’t No Picnic. “Every stage is a new platform to get to know yourself and other people, and people to know you… I really enjoyed seeing new faces and new reactions to my music.”

In her setlist, Girl Ultra performed several songs from her brand new album EL SUR that dropped earlier this year.

When asked about the inspiration behind the album and its title, she revealed to us, “the inspiration is my hometown, Mexico City — specifically like geographically the south of Mexico City — and it’s all about these new experiences and first-times that I’ve had musically and sexually… I started feeling that in my life again and in my music, and that’s why I wanted to pin it on the map. Everything is a rendition to El Sur.”

“I just wanted to have fun with who I am right now,” she said when referring to the new album, and we absolutely love that for her. It is clear EL SUR is an extremely vulnerable and very personal body of work.

If you haven’t heard any of Girl Ultra’s music before, don’t sweat it. The rising superstar shared with us what track she would recommend to someone who has not listened any of her songs. She suggested “Cosas q nadie ve,” which is the first song on her new album and one of our personal favorites.

“I feel like it’s a blend of everything that I am until now,” she said. “I’m talking about love and rawness and being like all secretive about doing like prohibited things, like forbidden things,” once again reinforcing the authentic nature of EL SUR.

Lucky for Girl Ultra fans everywhere, she doesn’t intend on slowing down the release of music anytime soon.

With the release of even more tracks in the future, Girl Ultra revealed to us, “I always wanna do something different, like I like to shapeshift. I don’t feel like ashamed about changing. I always embrace the changes and right now I really enjoy like club music and rock music and Español.”

After releasing collaborations like “Punk” with Little Jesus, “Ojos Negros” with Paula Cendejas and more, teaming up with another artist is definitely a possibility for Girl Ultra too. When asked her dream collaboration, she revealed “I really admire Julieta Venegas, and it would be interesting to do something unexpected.”

Whatever music she decides to put out, we are so excited to hear it! Until then, catch us streaming EL SUR on repeat.

Be sure to listen to the album below, starting with Girl Ultra’s recommendation “Cosas q nadie ve,” and let us know which song you enjoy most by either leaving a reaction at the bottom of the post or by sending us a tweet at @celebsecrets.
