Idarose Dishes on Her Creative Process Behind Latest Single “Different People” (Exclusive)

Idarose is back with another hit that we just can’t get enough of!

Her latest single, “Different People,” is a modern-take on the traditional break-up song that showcases Idarose’s signature tone and grows out even further the dream-pop soundscape that the talented artist has created, beginning with her past releases.

“Two years ago, I went through a breakup of sorts. We had been best friends for a few years, and then our relationship took a romantic turn (for the worse). It took me a long time to process the ending of the relationship, because I felt like I was losing two people in my life – someone I had developed feelings for, and a best friend,” Idarose tells Celeb Secrets. “Writing ‘Different People’ was so therapeutic for me — it felt like the moment I was finally able to make peace with what happened between us.”

In the song, dreamy-pop recording artist, songwriter, and producer closes the chapter on a relationship that just didn’t work out. Rather than putting the blame on anyone, Idarose resolves the conflict by coming to the conclusion that the two past-lovers are just different people and that moving on is the best thing for both.

Celeb Secrets: Thank you for chatting with us again! Congratulations on the release of “Different People.” What was the inspiration behind this song and what do you hope listeners feel when they hear it?

Idarose: “Two years ago, I went through a breakup of sorts. We had been best friends for a few years, and then our relationship took a romantic turn (for the worse). It took me a long time to process the ending of the relationship, because I felt like I was losing two people in my life – someone I had developed feelings for, and a best friend. Writing “Different People” was so therapeutic for me – it felt like the moment I was finally able to make peace with what happened between us. Through all the minutia, past all the he-said she-said, the bottom line is he and I are just too different – maybe we always were, or maybe one of us (or both) changed. Writing this song felt like coming up with the last chapter of a book I had been trying for so long to finish  – it feels like the moral of that story. I hope listeners can use the song as a form of healing and a celebration of being alone.”

CS: Do you have a favorite line in “Different People?” If so, which is it and why?

Idarose: I would say my favorite line is in the second verse”

“Hands, twisting through my hair

How can you say I wasn’t tender for you?

How can I say you never cared?”

I think it’s my favorite line because it takes me right back to a very specific memory. In the break up, we kept accusing each other of both not being fully invested in the relationship. Yet, when I go back to this memory, I realize that both of us really did care about each other and open up to one another in our own way, even though it was messy. We can play the blame game all we want, but in that “hands twisting through my hair” memory of mine, we were both being as vulnerable as we could let ourselves be. I think we all have a memory that takes us right back to the most beautiful part of a relationship. It’s always a tough memory to think about when a relationship is over, but I hope people can look at their memories almost like pictures they put in a scrapbook – even if it didn’t end well, those moments still mean a lot.”

CS: What is your creative process like? Walk us through a typical session.

Idarose: “When I’m making an ‘Idarose’ song, it usually starts like this: I’m probably daydreaming some story, situation or conversation in my brain. It’s almost like I’m constantly playing scenes and writing scripts in my head, and when I think of a line that feels special, I jump to my voice memo or notes app and jot it down. From there, if I have time and I’m not in the middle of something else, I keep talking through the idea, maybe record some melodies, and eventually I run to my computer and open a Logic session, where I start recording melody, harmony, and even begin to explore production for the idea. This process might last a few hours until I have a demo of sorts that I can walk away from my computer and listen to. It’s a magical process because one second I’m dreaming of an idea and the next I’m listening to it in a fully formed song in my car on a drive.”

CS: We love that you are all about women in the producer’s chair. What advice can you share to young girls who are aspiring to become producers, artists, and songwriters?

Idarose: “Believe in your vision! It’s cheesy, I know, but it’s something that took me a while to do. It’s great to get outside advice, and I feel lucky to have great people in my life who I can go to and run ideas by. However it is so easy to get swayed by feedback and to feel like you need to keep changing things. People will always have something to say about your music. If you trust your vision and you put your music out there confidently, people will naturally gravitate towards that confidence.”

CS: What else can fans expect from Idarose in 2021?

Idarose: “Different people is the end of a story that I’m just beginning to tell. I’ll be sharing more of that story soon.”
