Indi Star Says New Song “Hurt A Little” Was Inspired By Both Her Friendships and Relationships While Living in Los Angeles (Exclusive)

Pop newcomer Indi Star has a sassy, breakup anthem that’s about to get you in all of your feels.

The 16-year-old’s dropped her latest song “Hurt A Little” back in September, which is all about the pain of a one-sided heartbreak with a raw plea for the other person to feel the same anguish.

“You want them to hurt a little bit,” Indi tells Celeb Secrets reporter Juliet Schroder about the song’s meaning exclusively in a virtual interview. “You want them to show that that relationship or that friendship meant something to them.”

While Indi swears that the song isn’t about anyone specific, she tells us that it was heavily influenced by all of her friendships and relationships she’s made while living in Los Angeles chasing her dreams, which is a topic that almost everyone can relate to.

“The feedback has been great. All of the people that follow me on Instagram, they always say how much they like it and that means so much to me,” she shares. “I love hearing people’s stories and how they can connect to my songs. It’s why I love music.”

“Hurt A Little” was one of the many songs in Indi’s archives, however, when choosing what she wanted to release this fall, the 16-year-old reveals that it was the one that meant the most to her in this current time.

“I went through all my songs, found ‘Hurt A Little,’ and I started remembering how much the song meant to me. I wanted to rework on it, so I added better vocals and changed some lyrics. But in the end I fell in love with the song [again] and I really enjoy it,” she explains.

Shortly after releasing “Hurt A Little,” Indi brought the song to life with a dark, raw and vulnerable music video that depicts how she really feels about the relationships that inspired it. It also features fellow social media star Blake Manningwho Indi says was “perfect” for the clip.

“I met [Blake] about two years ago. I’m pretty sure he’s friends with all of my friends, but I never really had a conversation with him until this year,” Indi recalls. “We have the same manager, so we did a bunch of collabs and started talking and then I was like, ‘I need a guy for my music video’ and thought Blake would be perfect for it.”

“There were so many fun memories,” she continues. We got Pizza Hut — which was really crazy because I’ve never tried Pizza Hut’s chicken — but we were all just sitting down at the table talking, trying like the different sauces and stuff, which was super fun. “The entire day was just really great and really fun. Everybody was wonderful to work with.”

As for what’s next, Indi hopes to release more music in the coming months, with one of her goals being a project that has an indie rock sound.

“I’m inspired by Phoebe Bridgers and her band boygenius,” Indi shares. I love Lizzy McAlpine, Gracie Abrams and of course Taylor Swift. Those are the four main people I look up to right now, But there are so many other people that I listen to.”
