The NFL’s rushing touchdown leader in 2022 is heading to NOLA as former Lions halfback Jamaal Williams is signing a deal worth $12 million for three seasons with the Saints. Williams is coming off of his best season in which he ran for seventeen touchdowns and 1,066 yards, reaching the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career.

Williams will join a Saints running back room with all-pro runner Alvin Kamara. It will be interesting to see if the Saints use Williams just like the Lions did – Detroit mainly used Williams in goalline opportunities, while D’Andre Swift and others on the team were prioritized for other rushing opportunities.
New Orleans may have a unique and impactful duo with Kamara’s speed, pass-catching ability, and Williams’ powerfulness. Williams will reunite with Saints quarterback/tight end Taysom Hill as the two spent several seasons as teammates in college at BYU.

Aside from his production and impact on the field, Williams’ influence was felt heavily in the Lions locker room and within the fanbase. Williams was a massive part of the team’s turnaround lately under head coach Dan Campbell, and he will be irreplaceable. However, it seems the Lions are content with having Swift and the newly-signed David Montgomery as their primary backs.
This came as a shock to many due to Williams’ impact in Detroit, but all good things must come to an end, and now, the Saints will benefit heavily from having him on their squad.
