Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott Says Playing a Cop in the New Film “Renegades” was a ‘Dream Come True’ (Exclusive)

Being surrounded by household names in her new movie Renegades, Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott is making waves as Detective Inspector Moore in the brand new film.

“Renegades is an old school revenge thriller about a former green beret (Lee Majors) who is murdered by an international drugs gang (lead by Louis Mandylor) after they threaten his daughter (Patsy Kensit). His old comrades (Nick Moran, Ian Ogilvy, Billy Murray, Paul Barber) decide to take matters into their own hands and seek retribution – with a little help from underworld sage Sanchez (Danny Trejo). With the police (me) on their trail and the bodies mounting up, these renegades have to use every trick in their war hero playbook to survive,” Sothcott revealed to us in an exclusive interview.

Being a lover of crime shows, the British actress says that “playing a cop was a dream come true” and we have loved seeing the rising actress on our screens following her dreams! We are so proud of her.

To make the film even more special, Sothcott is one of the founders, alongside her husband, of the independent production company Shogun Films, which Renegades was created under. Try to name a more unstoppable duo than this couple!

Celeb Secrets: Your brand new movie Renegades is officially streaming in the United States on all digital platforms! Can you give us a little synopsis of the film?

Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott: Renegades is an old school revenge thriller about a former green beret (Lee Majors) who is murdered by an international drugs gang (lead by Louis Mandylor) after they threaten his daughter (Patsy Kensit). His old comrades (Nick Moran, Ian Ogilvy, Billy Murray, Paul Barber) decide to take matters into their own hands and seek retribution – with a little help from underworld sage Sanchez (Danny Trejo). With the police (me) on their trail and the bodies mounting up, these renegades have to use every trick in their war hero playbook to survive.”

CS: Can you tell us more about your character Detective Inspector Moore, as well as what it was like playing this role?

JS: “I play the cynical Scotland Yard detective investigating the initial murder and then the subsequent vigilante reprisals. At first I dismissed the ‘Renegades’ as suspects on account of their age, but after a conflab with my CIA ex (Michael Paré) I appreciate just what they’re capable of and eventually realise that what they’re doing is for the greater good – and even help them out! It was tremendous fun playing the role, I grew up on cop shows such as CHIPS, Cagney & Lacey and Starsky & Hutch, and my favorite shows now are things like NCIS, so playing a cop was a dream come true.”

CS: It has been said that this role will make you the next “action movie superstar.” How do you channel the intensity needed to thrive in action-packed roles like this one?

JS: “Well, it might give me a foot on the ladder in this space, that’s all I’d ask. I grew up on the classic action movies of the 80s and 90s – Stallone, Seagal, JCVD (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and it was always my dream to have a place in that genre. I’m very fit, I train every day, I watch what I eat (though I still enjoy myself) and I trained karate for many years. There’s nothing worse than an actor or actress coming on the set of one of these films and being intimidated by the physicality of a scene because otherwise it never looks real. I love these films and I love being in them.”

CS: What was it like working with stars like Danny Trejo, Ian Ogilvy, Patsy Kensit and more talented actors/actresses?

JS: “Well this is the thing – I’m literally the only actor in Renegades who isn’t a household name, which can be quite intimidating! Luckily I already knew some of the cast socially, but there were a few pinch myself moments. My first scene on the first day was with Stephanie Beacham who I grew up watching in The Colbys – what a legend, and what a joy to act with. The thing too is that at the end of the day, actors like to work – they’re excited to be there doing what they love. They say about the Shogun Films that actors enjoy doing them because they’re fun, they don’t take too long and people actually see them. I may be biased but I agree with that!”

CS: Who are you closest with off-set and why?

JS: “Patsy Kensit and I became fast friends and have been ever since – she’s so lovely and so much fun and we’re in constant touch. She’s a real girl’s girl and, I think, a really talented actress, and whenever we meet for lunch or talk on the phone we have such a giggle.”

CS: What is your favorite memory from filming Renegades, overall?

JS: “Just after we wrapped, my husband and I took Lee Majors and Billy Murray to dinner at Wilton’s, a famous and very English restaurant on Jermyn Street. They had become good buddies making the movie and both were old friends of ours. We were all staying in the same hotel and went back to the bar for drinks after and it was just the most magical evening, listening to these 3 wonderful guys swapping anecdotes and indulging in friendly brinkmanship. That will stay with me forever.”

CS: How has the process been different filming Renegades in comparison to other projects that you have been involved in?

JS: “The budget was substantially bigger, and even though most of it was filmed in London, due to the cast and the American director (Daniel Zirilli), it felt much more international. It just felt bigger, and it was a lot of fun.”

CS: Do you have any behind-the-scenes secrets from the set that you can share from filming Renegades?

JS: “We shot it in segments during the second half of the pandemic – so for example, the late Tiny Lister’s scene was filmed 6 months before the main London shoot. When it came to that there were a lot of international cast descending on one of the few hotels open in London. They all had to quarantine which was monitored quite strictly by the covid ‘police’ who would make unannounced inspections to make sure nobody was out of their rooms in what was essentially an empty hotel. Lee Majors was confined to his room for his week and made the very valid point that at his stage of life a week is a very long time. Anyways, one of my jobs behind the scenes was to run around London picking up various coffee, food and beard dye for the cast until they could emerge from their rooms. I guess the funniest thing is that my husband, who is also the film’s producer, ended up being Lee Majors’ stunt double for his death scene. He’s a big chap like Lee and so when the proposed double wasn’t a great match, they asked him to step in and he agreed… which he may have come to regret when he found himself laid out in the middle of a busy road in Islington covered in fake blood while three big men stomped on his head!”

CS: Do you have any secrets about your castmates from Renegades that fans might not expect?

JS: “I think what surprised everyone was Nick Moran’s martial arts prowess. We had talked about karate a lot as it’s something we had in common and we’re good friends but in that final scene with Louis and Nick Onsloe he really pulled this John Wick routine out of the bag, which people weren’t ready for on set. There were a lot of jaws on the floor.”

CS: Now that Renegades is officially streaming on all digital platforms, what’s next for you? Do you have any projects currently in the works?

JS: “Yes a western revenge thriller called Reckoning Day set in the gold rush era and a very dark modern thriller called Chase. Both of those are being directed by the very talented Brandon Slagle. I’m hoping that both of those will roll in the first half of 2023. It’s hard with these indie films to know what will go first as there are so many variables with finance and cast, but it feels like 2023 will be a very busy year for Shogun Films.”

CS: Do you have any goals for yourself in 2023 career-wise?

JS:I’d really like to try to get an episode of an American TV show, preferably a cop show. I could die happy then haha!”

CS: Lastly, since we are Celeb Secrets, do you have any secrets about yourself that fans might not know?

JS: “I get a lot of comments about my appearance on social media and 99% of it is very positive. There are a few very creepy guys online though who leave horrible misogynistic comments about my lips having been enhanced with collagen and that I’ve had botox, absolutely none of which is true, and I’d happily tell you if it was, a woman’s appearance should be her choice. The fact that lip liner and overlining lips is clearly a new concept to them and that they immediately think it is cosmetic surgery says a lot about them but also about the society we live in. Sad really.
