Justin Herbert Stars in Chargers 23-17 Win Over the Dolphins on Sunday Night Football

Week fourteen’s Sunday Night Football matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Miami Dolphins was highly anticipated by fans from around the world as two third-year quarterbacks in, Justin Herbert and Tua Tagovailoa, have always been connected and will continue to be connected due to the duo being picked one pick away from each other in the 2020 NFL Draft. With that said, Herbert and the Chargers outdueled Tagovailoa and the Dolphins by a final score of 23-17 as the Chargers improved to 7-6 and the Dolphins fell to 8-5.

In their win, the Chargers outplayed and outcoached the Dolphins in this one as their defense arguably put on their best performance of the season, and that was without many starters, including Joey Bosa and Derwin James.

Someone who made a critical impact in this game was six-year defensive back Michael Davis who had the tough assignment of covering Tyreek Hill for most of the night; Davis finished with two pass deflections and two tackles.

Some other standouts on the Chargers were Asante Samuel Jr., Drue Tranquill, and Morgan Fox, to name a few. Samuel Jr. did a tremendous job of covering Jaylen Waddle as the superstar wideout was held to just two receptions for 31 yards; Samuel Jr. also added three tackles and a pass deflection; Tranquill had two pass deflections, a quarterback hit, and five tackles; while Fox added a sack and a quarterback hit.

Herbert led the way on the offensive side of the ball as the Pro Bowl quarterback finished the game with 367 yards and a touchdown.

Also contributing highly was the star wide receiver duo of Mike Williams and Keenan Allen; Williams had six catches for 116 yards and a touchdown, while Allen caught twelve passes for 92 yards; something of note, Williams put up this star-studded performance against All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard, who couldn’t keep up with Williams.

Tailback Austin Ekeler also contributed nicely and showed his versatility as a running back wide receiver hybrid, finishing with a combined 104 yards to go along with a rushing touchdown.

As for Miami, it was a very unbalanced performance as the majority of the bright spots for the team came on the defensive side, with tremendous performances by Christian Wilkins, Jaelan Phillips, and Kader Kohou, with one real bright spot on the offensive side of the ball, with Tyreek Hill scoring Miami’s two touchdowns in the game and also breaking the franchise’s all-time single-season receiving yards record set by Mark Clayton in 1984.

All in all, as many yards and numbers as the Chargers put up in this one, the Dolphins were just an onside kick recovery away from a potential game-winning drive.

The Chargers will look to build from this one and pick up another win in week fifteen as they host the Tennessee Titans.

The Dolphins will look to bounce back from this two-game west coast losing streak in a Saturday night AFC East division showdown in Buffalo against the Bills.
