The Mets have decided to add a veteran bat in Tommy Pham to their squad as they look to bring a World Series title to the Tri-State area.
Pham is a career .259 hitter and can play all three outfield positions; the contract is for one year and is worth $6 million.

Pham joins the Mets with a cast of outfielders, including Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte, and Mark Canha. Pham will most likely be New York’s fourth outfielder, and although not very much talked about, a fourth outfielder is essential for the success of a baseball team. The fourth outfielder is someone reliable and ready no matter the situation. To compare it to another sport, a fourth outfielder is the equivalent of a sixth man in the NBA.

Pham will now have the opportunity to compete for a championship as he joins a stacked Mets team that added a stacked group of pitchers this offseason, including future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander and All-Star reliever David Robertson.
For the Mets, this also ensures they have a solid backup plan in case an injury occurs to a member of their outfield core.

Last season, Pham, unfortunately, made more headlines for an off-the-field altercation rather than his play on the field. While a member of the Reds and before a game against the Giants, Pham went up to San Fran Outfielder Joc Pederson and slapped him in the face. Pham slapped Pederson over a fantasy football discussion, as both sluggers play in the same league.
Tommy Pham slapped Joc Pederson across the head and was suspended for three games because lingering resentment from a rule regarding IR designation in their fantasy football league spilled over into real life and led to Pham’s attack.

Pham was not regretful and stated that he takes fantasy football seriously due to the money at stake; he also expressed his popularity for being in Las Vegas casinos throughout the offseason.

This signing will not make significant headlines, but for those who follow baseball regularly, it may heighten their expectations surrounding the Mets for the upcoming 2023 season.
