Nathan Chen Breaks Records and Skates His Way to Gold (Watch)

Nathan Chen left it all out on the ice! Taking home, the gold for his incredible free skate performance at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The 22-year-old figure skater took home the gold medal for his incredible free skate performance at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on Thursday (Feb. 10). After hitting a nearly perfect performance to a medley of Elton John songs, Chen fully embraced what it was like to be a true “Rocket Man,” as he landed a quad flip and triple toe loop, a quad flip, and a triple axel!

Chen received a remarkable score of 218.63 in his free skate and a 332.60 for his overall score. And earlier in the week, Chen, broke the record for earning the highest score ever for his performance in the men’s short program!

This year’s games were Chen’s redemption from the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.  When Chen arrived at The Games in 2018, he was a lead contender for the gold. However, he had a poor performance on the ice causing him to tumble and lose the opportunity to get the gold.

Chen’s competitor, Yuzuru Hanyu, ended up winning the medal in 2018, with Chen finishing fifth int he contest.

Fast-forward to 4 years later, and the roles seemed to reverse! Hanyu was the one left making several mistakes. Hanyu, was attempting a quad axel in his free skate but ended up falling to the ice. Hanyu ended up placing in fourth place and Chen was the one now taking home the gold!

Shortly after receiving the gold, NBC News caught up with Chen to see if it lived up to his dreams and he said, “Oh absolutely! I mean I truly never thought I would make it this far in skating and to have the opportunity to be here at the Olympics and to be able to do what I did, it’s all thanks to people who have supported me during my career.”
