Entertainment Weekly gathers cast members for the long awaited Devil Wears Prada reunion. In celebration of the film’s 15th anniversary, the Zoom call was used to discuss memories, history, and insights.

The lineup included Meryl Streep (Miranda Priestly), Anne Hathaway (Andy Sachs), Emily Blunt (Emily Charlton), Stanley Tucci (Nigel Kipling), Adrian Grenier (Nate Cooper), Gisele Bündchen (Serena), director David Frankel, and costume designer Patricia Field.
The modern classic was adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s book of the same title. Weisberger’s inspiration stems from her own experiences working under Anna Wintour, editor in chief of Vogue. The plot follows “Andy Sachs,” a young journalist in search of work. She is hired as a personal assistant to an infamously powerful fashion magazine editor and struggles to immerse herself in a cutthroat work environment and an industry whose jargon is foreign.
This story is an homage to the self; How to be passionate without losing who you are, the boundaries of sacrifice, and what is most important to you. Joey Nolfi of Entertainment Weekly pointed out the timeless theme during his moderation of the event. “How far are you willing to sort of relinquish who you are, for the sake of a job that zaps up most of your life? The movie has nine lives. It has a new life now as culture is changing,” he says.

At surface level, Miranda is a nightmarish boss, who toys with the emotions of her colleagues and creates a space that sets ego’s up for failure; At a deeper look, she is not the villain, but a heroine who shows Andy what must be given up to be great.
Emily Blunt highlights that “[Miranda] gives [audiences] a character who a lot of us can aspire to, to be uncompromising, tough, real, honest, to the point, and not have to contort and dance to get your point across without hurting or offending anybody,” to which Blunt thinks that “men have a much easier time with.”
Meryl Streep touches on her own character, and expresses that “absolute power corrupts absolutely….[but she] liked that there wasn’t any backing away from the horrible parts of [Miranda], and the real scary parts of her had to do with the fact that she didn’t try to ingratiate, which is always the female emollient in any situation where you want your way.”
The 2000s legendary film did not become a hit overnight. Fear of Anna Wintour “cast a shadow over pre-production,” and kept industry professionals from giving anecdotes or talking about their experiences. Streep found herself depressed after adopting method acting and isolating herself from cast-mates. Hathaway was the ninth choice for the part, and Streep had to advocate for her casting.
