Easily one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all-time, Wicked has been rumored to be in pre-production for years and now we’re saying who we want to star in it.
Running at the Gershwin Theatre in New York since its opening in 2003, Wicked tells the tale of the witches from The Wizard of Oz before Dorothy dropped in. Glinda (originally played by Kristin Chenoweth) and Elphaba (originally played by Idina Menzel) don’t initially hit it off at school, but once they connect, they find themselves going down roads they never anticipated. Wicked is now the fifth longest-running Broadway musical of all-time.
The Internet exploded this week when Amanda Seyfried admitted that she’s been campaigning for the role of Glinda for five years. She’s now hoping director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, the upcoming-In the Heights) will consider her.
“I’ve never been more ready to hit those notes,” the 35-year-old Oscar nominee said on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “There’s things that you will always be attached to and want to do no matter how old you get. If they still haven’t made Wicked by the time I’m 50, then fine, I’ll let it go.”
As for her Elphaba? Seyfried mentioned Les Misérables costars Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks, as well as Anna Kendrick.
However, the reception from fans about a Seyfried-Kendrick pairing have been a bit icy.
TikTok creator @broadwaydiva posted a reaction that now over 400,000 views and over 100,000 likes saying, “When I tell you I would rather gargle bleach and nail my private parts to a concrete ground than see this duo…”
