Baker Mayfield Leads Rams to Epic 17-16 Comeback Win Against the Raiders on Thursday Night Football

Baker Mayfield made history in his first appearance as a member of the Los Angeles Rams as the Heisman Trophy Winner became the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to lead a 13+ comeback win in his debut with two different teams.

The Rams trailed the Raiders 16-3 with a little over three minutes left in the fourth quarter; with that said, Mayfield and the Rams would score on back-to-back drives to win the game and move to 4-9 on the year while the Raiders fall to 5-8 after coming into the game with a three-game winning streak.

Mayfield came into his Rams debut with just a few days of learning the playbook and trying to get acclimated with his new teammates. At the start of this fantastic primetime game, Mayfield was not on the field as John Wolford started the game at the quarterback position for the Rams.

After not attempting a pass with Wolford and punting, Sean McVay decided to put in the newly acquired Mayfield for the team’s second drive of the game. The decision paid off immediately as Mayfield ended the drive with a 21-yard pass to wide receiver Van Jefferson and a six-yard rush which led to a 55-yard field goal made by Matt Gay to put Los Angeles on the board and cut their deficit to 7-3.

With that said, the Rams were unable to put points up on the board until the very end of the game when their comeback began as they capped off a 75-yard drive in which they took almost ten minutes off the clock with a 1-yard touchdown rush by Cam Akers to score their first touchdown of the game and cut their deficit to 16-10.

Following that incredible drive, their defense made a huge stop and forced a Raiders punt; much credit should be given to Raiders punter A.J. Cole as he boomed a 64-yard beauty that was downed at the Rams two-yard line.

With exactly two minutes left on the play clock, with no timeouts, and down by six with a quarterback that arrived two days prior, the Rams were somehow able to drive down the field and win the game on an absolute dime of a pass by Mayfield to Jefferson in the back of the endzone to take a 17-16 lead with just ten seconds left in the contest.

The Rams defense again came up big and intercepted Derek Carr to finalize the 17-16 comeback win. Speaking of the Rams defense, this unit allowed the offense to stay in the ballgame as they made continuous stops throughout this Thursday night affair.

It was an incredible Rams debut for Baker Mayfield, and it was great to see him with all smiles after being cut by the Panthers just a few days ago.

The Rams will look to pick up another win in week fifteen as they head to Green Bay to face off against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers on Monday Night Football.

The Raiders will look to bounce back from an embarrassing letdown as they host the Patriots in week fifteen.
