Week nine’s Sunday Night Football matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans was a defensive battle as the Chiefs edged the Titans on the leg of kicker Harrison Butker who nailed a 28-yard field goal in overtime to win 20-17 and improve to 6-2 on the year.
On a night in which Patrick Mahomes threw for a whopping 446 yards, the Chiefs superstar to just one touchdown through the air due to the phenomenal play of the Tennessee Titans defensive unit.
The Titans sacked Mahomes four times and intercepted him once. It was definitely a night to remember for Titans cornerback Roger McCreary who had eight tackles in the game and also picked off Mahomes; joining McCreary in the Titans standout category were defensive lineman Denico Autry, Jeffery Simmons, Mario Edwards Jr., and DeMarcus Walker; Autry had two sacks in the game, while Edwards Jr. and Walker each had their own.
The Titans also shut down the Chiefs running attack as Patrick Mahomes would end up being the leading rusher on the night for Kansas City with 63 yards on six attempts in which he displayed that “Mahomes Magic.”
As for the offensive side of the ball, it was pretty well-known that Tennesse’s offensive game plan coming into the game would be to feed superstar running back Derrick Henry the ball while trying to take some pressure off of rookie quarterback Malik Willis in just his second career start. The Chiefs were able to slow down the running attack of the Titans in the second half of the game, as Tennessee would score just three points in the second half after having an early 14-0 lead to begin the game; much credit should be given to Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and his crew for readjusting their gameplan at the break and coming out with a much more executed one in the second half.
With that said, much credit should be given to Willis as he avoided multiple sacks throughout the game and had his receivers drop multiple passes that he put on the money.
The future is bright for Willis, and it will be interesting to see if he is named the Titans starter even when veteran Ryan Tannehill is healed from an ankle injury.
