Well-known love songs are almost like second nature for music listeners. For many, the lyrics to a classic romantic ballad resonates with ease. However, for gifted singer/songwriter Jasmine Thompson, it wasn’t until recently that she felt she truly had an experience to make all the great romance songs meaningful. Now with a soon-to-be classic of her own, Thompson has teamed up with Calum Scott to gift the world a new love song titled “love is just a word.”
Scott and Thompson have paired their harmonious voices perfectly for this soothing duet. The song delivers a touching message that those in love know all too well; When that special feeling isn’t shared with that special someone, the word “love” simply holds no meaning.
In an exclusive interview with Celeb Secrets, Thompson shared that it was a relationship of her own that brought this idea upon her.
“…I had these lyrics in my head, which is basically, you know, every word has already been written by these amazing artists already,” Thompson explained. “And there’s these songs that we grow up with, or we always hear that are just like symbols of love, you know? And these songs that you’ll hear in the chorus that I’m referencing, it’s all about the connection you have with someone. But for me, I was going through a relationship that I just really felt. I was like, you know, before this, I was listening to these songs and they just didn’t have as much meaning. But when I met this person and when I was having this feeling, I was actually just like, ‘This is given me a reason to like, listen to these songs,’ do you get what I mean? I was just like dancing to them in the kitchen during lockdown and I was just like, ‘I just feel so, like, they’ve got meaning now.'”
When asked how she defines that funny little word we call “love,” Thompson shared that her heartwarming definition contains “trust and time.”
“God, I don’t know. Like I think it’s just trust and time,” Thompson said. “I think it’s like how much effort and care you give to the other person like they never ask anything from you and you never asked anything from them, but it’s just, you choose to be with them.
The London-based artist explained that although she is familiar with the love she has for her family and friends she is still learning the ropes when it comes to relationship love.
“I don’t know. I don’t think I’m the right…I know that I’ve got love with my friends and love with my family and that for me is like the purest love I could ever have. I’m not great with the relationship kind of love yet. Like I don’t really think I will be for a long time, which is fine because I need to be single for a long time because I’ve got to work on me, but that’s pretty much, yeah.”
It’s clear to fans that her love for the craft of music is one she knows quite well. Pairing up with Scott to make a beautiful song underneath undeniable artist chemistry, Thompson shared that one of the most special pieces of this project was getting to perform it with him.
“[I] went back to London and a few months later, John messaged me saying that he had reached out to another artist he works with a lot called Calum Scott and I was like blown away cause I love him and I’ve known of his music for so long and watching his career has been incredible. And he said that he sent ‘love is just a word’ to Calum and I was so excited because he went in the studio and he recorded a verse and he sent it over and I heard it and I was just like this is, hearing someone else sing a song that you’ve made is gorgeous because you spend so much time working on it and they just take it and bring it into another world. So went back to the studio with Calum and he like flushed out a few verses and went on to do the melody together and just really like tried to just piece it together and finish it and we did.”
Soaking in those moments post lockdown where two can perform live together, Thompson explained that there really is no magic like performing a love song as a duet in person.
“And it’s like, I don’t know, it just became a really beautiful duet because it’s so special to sing a love song with someone. And I remember we were filming a video together for the first time and actually being able to do a duet and sing and look each other in the eyes and do this love song. Like it made my heart so full because you’re with someone that you trust, you know, it was just so much fun. I’m so happy it’s like coming out.”
