Backup goaltender for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Game 1 hero, Casey DeSmith, will be out for the remainder of the playoffs after surgery.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan announced the successful core surgery this morning, and confirmed that the backup goalie, who has been serving the role as primary goalie after starter Tristan Jarry suffered a broken foot, will miss the rest of the postseason.
The surgery comes following DeSmith’s stunning performance in Game 1 versus the New York Rangers on Tuesday night, a game that went into three overtime periods and lasted nearly five hours. DeSmith left that game in the third overtime and was replaced with tertiary goalie Louis Domingue, who ended up getting the victory.
Coach Sullivan has announced that Casey DeSmith had successful core muscle surgery this morning. He will be unavailable for the remainder of the playoffs.

Domingue put up an impressive performance in last night’s Game 2 at Madison Square Garden, in which the 30-year-old made 35 saves, but it was not enough as the Rangers simply overpowered the Penguins and ended up beating them by a score of 5-2. Now, Sullivan has confirmed that Domingue will be the starting goalie for the Penguins for the time being, with fourth-in-line goaltender Alex D’Orio serving as Domingue’s backup.
The Rangers will look to cash in on Pittsburgh’s goalie woes with a win tomorrow night at the PPG Paints Arena, while the Pens will look to defend their home turf. Whoever wins tomorrow’s game will go up 2-1 in the series, and will become the likely victor to advance in these ice hockey affairs.
