The Kansas City Chiefs Are The Champions After 38-35 Super Bowl LVII Victory Against the Eagles

The Kansas City Chiefs have done it again, as they picked up their second Super Bowl title in the last four seasons with a 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes won his second Super Bowl ring and second Super Bowl MVP in just his fifth season as a starter in the NFL.

This game was just as advertised in terms of the evenness between both squads, as each team battled until the very end of the contest. It was an absolute masterclass of coaching by head coach Andy Reid and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo of the Chiefs. Both men did a fantastic job of putting their players in the best possible situations to succeed.

Spagnuolo may have been Kansas City’s main x-factor throughout this postseason run as the veteran play-caller did a fantastic job of game-planning for all three Chiefs playoff games as well as allowing his guys to play better than expected, and with all that said, it should be noted that the Chiefs have multiple starters and critical contributors throughout their defensive unit that were rookies.

As for the standouts on the field, Patrick Mahomes had another legendary performance as the Chiefs signal-caller did everything in his power to help his team win, whether accurately throwing passes or running for first downs while wobbling with an ankle sprain. Joining Mahomes was his favorite target, superstar tight end Travis Kelce. Kelce had another iconic performance as he now trails only Jerry Rice for the most postseason touchdown catches in NFL history.

Someone else to mention for the Chiefs is rookie running back Isiah Pacheco; the 2022 seventh-round pick had a fantastic Super Bowl debut that concluded with 76 yards and a touchdown on fifteen carries.

To stay on the offensive studs of the game, it was a historic Super Bowl performance by Eagles All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurts; Hurts made NFL history multiple times in the big game as he became the first quarterback to rush for three touchdowns in the Super Bowl and the first player to rush for at least two touchdowns and throw one touchdown in the Super Bowl. Hurts made a huge statement this season, and much credit should go to him for the hard work and leadership that has allowed him to become the player he is today.

To switch things up to some critical defensive performances in this one, Chiefs second-year middle linebacker Nick Bolton put on an incredible performance that gave fans some flashes of Ray Lewis, as Bolton just seemed to be in on every play. Also standing out in the linebacking room for KC was rookie third-round pick Leo Chenal; Chenal and Bolton combined for fifteen tackles, while Chenal also added a sack and a tackle for loss. Bolton added a touchdown on the day after recovering a fumble and taking it to the house for six.

As for the Eagles defense, it was a very underwhelming performance, specifically for the Eagles pass-rushing unit. That unit was highly praised in the weeks leading up to SBLVII, and with that said, the hype was not at all lived up to, as the Eagles defense had zero sacks in the contest. Much credit should go to the Chiefs offensive line for an incredible performance against a unit that had the third most sacks in a season in NFL history.

Something else of note: the Chiefs special teams completely outplayed the Eagles, including a 65-yard punt return by Kadarius Toney, now the longest punt return in Super Bowl history. Toney also added a touchdown catch in the game.

As for the game itself, it came down to the wire as Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker nailed a 27-yard field goal to give the Chiefs a 38-35 lead with eight seconds to go, which would end up being the Super Bowl-winning kick for KC.

All in all, this was arguably one of the best Super Bowls of all time as this even of a matchup is rare to find in a Super Bowl. The Chiefs have now solidified themselves as one of the greatest dynasties in the history of the National Football League, and there is no end insight.
