We Need to Talk About “The Summer I Turned Pretty” Season 2 Premiere Episode

Season 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty is FINALLY here, and get ready for more Belly, Conrad, Jeremiah, and Taylor Swift (the sad version).

For a tiny season one recap, Belly heads to Cousin’s Beach every summer, with her bother Steven and her mom Laurel, to join Susannah and her sons Conrad and Jeremiah. This summer was different because Belly blossomed and finally caught the eye of her childhood crush Conrad, but Jeremiah was also interested in Belly. Susannah always knew Belly was destined for one of her boys, but which one? Everything was put on a pause when both families found out about Susannah’s cancer, but Team Conrad girls still got what they’ve been waiting for – Belly and Conrad share a moment, a kiss, to Taylor’s “This Love (Taylor’s Version).”

We enjoyed last season SO much… it had everything we wanted when it came to nostalgia, a love triangle, and friendship, all while reliving our teenage years while listening to Taylor Swift’s songs (Taylor’s Version) for the first time again. While there were a ton of cheeky moments throughout the inaugural season, The Summer I Turned Pretty had some hard-to-watch moments, including Jeremiah’s dance moves and Taylor’s Gen-Z language to a TikTok song played every 30 seconds.

After watching this first episode, we knew this season was going to be different in so many ways – and we are here for it.

🚨 SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ if you have not watched Season 2 Episode 1 of “The Summer I Turned Pretty!” 🚨

Christopher Briney (Conrad), Lola Tung (Belly)

Episode one starts where last season left off — Belly and Conrad are together. She’s wearing the infinity necklace, and Susannah tells them how perfect they were; except Belly wasn’t in Cousin’s, Conrad and her weren’t together, and Susana is dead. It was all a dream and Belly wakes up in class trying to escape reality in her dreams.

So what happened?

This season tries to catch the audience up on everything they missed after the summer was over by flashing back to the past. We find out after last summer, Belly and Conrad did in fact get together and Susannah was thrilled; while Jeremiah felt used and forgotten. He warned Belly that Conrad would break her heart.

Since everyone is dealing with emotions and Susannah’s cancer, Conrad and Belly put a pause in their relationship, but promised to always be there for each other. Conrad gifts Belly the infinity necklace and they continue to talk on the phone and be there for one another. Conrad comes all the way from Brown to visit Belly in her hometown and tells her that he doesn’t think he’ll ever get over her. They kiss and start to date. It really is the love story we were all hoping for, except that was in the past. The present is not all rainbows and butterflies.

In the present, Steven graduates and is enjoying summer before heading off to Princeton, while Belly’s school year isn’t going as planned. Her grades are declining and her volleyball captain title has been revoked, which makes her no longer in volleyball club. Laurel is grieving Susanna’s death in her own way by writing a memoir honoring her best friend and in Belly’s case, not focusing on her children. Belly doesn’t have a present mom and lost Susannah and the boys, so she escapes her reality by constantly thinking of the past. She tries to get her life together by rejoining the Varsity team and attending her brother’s graduation party.

Rain Spencer (Taylor), Lola Tung (Belly)

For anyone wondering, Taylor is back, with bangs, a boyfriend named Milo, and honestly, less annoying. She really does get a redemption arch this season and we’re really rooting for her. Taylor is being a girl’s girl this season and is there for Belly and head to the party together. Belly tries to enjoy it, but in the end wants to go home. She tells Steven that she is ready to leave and to grab his things. They get into an altercation and Steven brings up not only Susannah’s death but how she messed up everything between Jeremiah and Conrad — how they don’t call him back because of her. Belly said she ruins everything, even Susannah’s funeral (we will learn more about this in future episodes). She drives home alone to “Driver’s License” by Olivia Rodrigo, which we hope leaves you in tears as much as it did for us.

Belly heads home and decides to call Jeremiah; she asks about Conrad. He tells her Conrad has been gone since yesterday and won’t answer any of his calls or text messages. Jeremiah has a plan to head to Brown and look for him. With a very predictable cliff hanging ending, Belly claims she’s coming too.
