Just weeks after losing Tom Brady to retirement, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed former Heisman winner and former number one overall pick Baker Mayfield to a one-year $8.5 million contract. Mayfield is set to compete against former Florida Gator quarterback Kyle Trask for Tampa’s starting QB job.

After some tough times in Mayfield’s career last season, which included being traded from the Browns to the Panthers, Mayfield found a home to end the season with the Rams—his time in Los Angeles included an exciting Rams debut in a Thursday Night Football comeback victory. Mayfield will now play for his third team in two seasons but will have a massive opportunity to become the Bucs, next franchise quarterback.
The Bucs are in an interesting position with Brady retiring; with many high contracts on the roster, it will be interesting to see the team’s direction. As of now, the team has released running back Leonard Fournette while bringing back long-time team captain Lavonte David and keeping around starting cornerback Jamel Dean.
If the Bucs keep their top wideouts in, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, this will be Mayfield’s best group of receivers in his career.

All in all, this signing makes much sense for both sides but may be determined based on the personnel moves made by Tampa’s front office.
