With the release of Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, Shaboozey is quickly taking over country music.
The Virginia native garnered overnight success with his viral single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” making him the first two Black artists, alongside Beyoncé, to top the chart with back-to-back Number One songs. Although the first tasting of the album was lighthearted and fun, the collection confronts much heavier topics throughout, such as heartbreak, depression and suicide. He isn’t afraid of spilling all of his truths.
He shared, “This album means the world to me, it’s a reflection of my journey and the stories that shaped me. Growing up in Virginia, music was our way of speaking truths and finding joy, and I tried to capture that in every track. It’s a blend of all my experiences, the highs, the lows, and everything in between. I hope when y’all listen, you feel that same connection and authenticity. It’s not an album, it’s a piece of my soul, and I’m grateful to share it with you.”
With the genuinely ambitious record aside, quite a few more of today’s country’s biggest names have dropped singles that we will have on loop all summer long, including HARDY, Megan Moroney, Brett Young, Maddie & Tae, Kassi Ashton, Michael Ray, Jackson Dean, Bree Jaxson, Mary Sarah, Ashley Ryan, Brian Falduto, Chancey Williams, Braxton Keith, Logan Crosby, Kolby Cooper, Sam Williams, Jordana Bryant, LECADE, Meg McRee, Ben Burgess, Josh Ross, Colby Acuff, American Blonde and Chris Housman.
There were also some great albums, EPs and collaborations featured on this week’s New Music Friday playlist as well, including Terri Clark‘s Terri Clark: Two Two featuring incredible collaborations with Kelly Clarkson, Carly Pearce, Lainey Wilson and more, Brett Young‘s Across The Sheets (Barefoot Edition), Willie Nelson‘s The Border, Kameron Marlowe‘s Keepin’ The Lights On, Kelsey Hart‘s Life With You, Tiffany Woys‘ I’m Your Woman, Joshua Quimby‘s Back Home and Georgia Webster‘s Signs; with collaborations such as Noah Hicks and Justin Moore‘s “Dirt Roads Dirt,” Dylan Marlowe and Yung Gravy‘s “Boys Back Home,” Annie Bosko and Dwight Yoakam‘s “Heart Burn” and William Michael Morgan and Kylie Frey‘s “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.”
