Are Boygenius superfans ready?
The trio’s long-awaited debut album, the record, is out now! With the release of their first full-length record, they’ve also shared a visual component directed by Kristen Stewart.
You can watch “The Film” below.
“The Film” is divided into three sections – resembling a triptych. Each section has very distinct visuals for the songs “$20,” “Emily I’m Sorry,” and “True Blue,” however the visuals are very much intertwined with one another.
The first segment focuses on Julien Baker, running around in a home that appears to be slightly familiar to her and later working on a run-down car. The video ends with the band taking what appears to be a blood oath with the younger versions of themselves (very much reminiscent of ‘The Craft’). The “Emily I’m Sorry” piece shows us Phoebe Bridgers standing in a monster truck arena as the enormous vehicles fly over piles of dirt. In the final portion, Lucy Dacus chucks her furniture into another room so she can paint her walls blue and fill the space with all-blue furniture. Dacus’ bandmates come together to help her.

The 14-minute film is as bizarre as it is beautiful, as it captures the essence of each of the singles that were released earlier this year. Each segment gives us a glimpse at one of the band members as individuals but manages to make its way full circle — a reunion of the three members as they all hold each other at the end of the film. Stewart does a really good job of highlighting the group while also adding her own personal flare. We love to see it!
Kristen Stewart has been dabbling in the directorial sphere for quite some time now, taking the reins on several projects. Those projects include the music video for Sage + the Saint‘s 2014 single “Take Me Down to the South” and Chvrches “Down Side of Me” in 2017. She also was behind short films Come Swim and Crickets and an episode of Netflix anthology series Homemade.

The trio — Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus — announced the record back in January, with its release rolling out almost five years after their first EP. In honor of the new record, the band will be hitting the road again after making an appearance at Coachella.
The band is also set to lead one arm of the Re:Set Concert series. The tour is set to being at the Fox Theater in April and end at the infamous Red Rocks Amphitheater in August. Headliners for the tour also include Carly Rae Jepsen, Broken Social Scene, Bartees Strange, Claud and Illuminati Hotties.
