While it may have had a short run on Broadway, Head Over Heels absolutely shined in showing different types of LGBTQ+ experiences. Based on The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia and featuring music from The Go-Go’s catalog, this show does not seem like it should work but is absolute fun.

King Basilius (Jeremy Kushnier) of Arcadia is struggling with both of his daughter’s love lives. Pamela (Bonnie Milligan) refuses to choose a suitor because – though her father does not know – she is in love with her handmaid Mopsa (Taylor Iman Jones). Musidorus (Andrew Durand) starts dressing as a woman to be near his love Philoclea (Alexandra Socha), the king’s other daughter. Matters become worse when the oracle Pythio (Peppermint) warns of a bad future for the kingdom.

Peppermint, of RuPaul’s Drag Race fame, became the first transgender woman to originate a principal role on Broadway. The show features a non-binary character, a lesbian romance and gender fluidity, making it the most accepting show to grace the stage.
