15 LGBTQ+ Broadway Shows to Celebrate Broadway’s Return

Discussing homophobia in a locker room setting, Take Me Out mixes LGBTQ+ themes with sports and how hard it is for a player to come out.

Bi-racial baseball player Darren Lemming (Daniel Sunjata) is the star of his team until he announces that he is gay. His relationships with his teammates and coaches change. He gets confronted in the locker room for both his race and his sexuality, especially by pitcher Shane Mungitt (Frederick Weller).

There are many tensions in this show, and it exposes how closed-minded the athletics industry can be to openly LGBTQ+ players. It made waves in 2003 when it won three Tonys, including Best Play.

If you are interested in seeing this one, you will not have to wait much longer as the Broadway revival that was originally scheduled to open last year will now open in spring 2022 with Jesse Williams, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Patrick J. Adams leading the cast.
