Say what you want about Ryan Murphy’s film version of The Prom but if you have not seen it on stage, you have not experienced the true magic of this over-the-top rom-com.

Needing some good PR after a Broadway flop, Barry Glickman (Brooks Ashmanskas) and Dee Dee Allen (Beth Leavel) along with down and out actors Trent Oliver (Christopher Sieber) and Angie Dickinson (Angie Schworer) head to Indiana to protest a high school that won’t let teen Emma (Caitlin Kinnunen) take her girlfriend to the prom.

Now if you were left disappointed by James Corden, you would have loved to see Ashmanskas onstage. An actual gay man, he has the spirit and emotion that Barry needed. The show broke barriers and allowed for a lesbian high school romance, but perhaps its best feat was that it showed the first LGBTQ+ kiss ever on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
