Speaking of sexual desires, Spring Awakening is all about teenagers discovering sex in 19th century Germany. Matched with an alternative rock score, the show has an interesting juxtaposition, but it works a lot better than you would expect.

Wendla (Lea Michele) explores her body and wants to know where babies come from and her mother (Christine Estabrook) lies to her to protect her. Melchior (Jonathan Groff) falls for Wendla and the two experiment together. Melchior’s friend Moritz (John Gallagher Jr.) struggles to get by in school and in life.

The LGBTQ+ component comes in with two boys at Melchior’s school – Hänschen (Jonathan B. Wright) and Ernst (Gideon Glick). The pair meet up one night and talk about life before kissing and Ernst proclaiming his love. It’s a small moment but the entire show does well with exploring sexuality.
