15 LGBTQ+ Broadway Shows to Celebrate Broadway’s Return

The Inheritance

“The Inheritance” shows how Eric (Kyle Soller) and Toby’s (Andrew Burnap) relationship falls apart once Leo (Samuel H. Levine) is introduced into their lives. | Photo Credit: Marc Brenner

While the play’s long runtime – it was shown in two parts that each lasted over three hours – likely lead to its early demise, The Inheritance will go down in history for its greatness. When reviewed, The Telegraph declared that the show may be “perhaps the most important American play of this century.”

Inspired by E.M. Forster’s Howard’s End, this show follows the demise of Eric (Kyle Soller) and Toby’s (Andrew Burnap) relationship as they get to know Adam (Samuel H. Levine) and Walter (Paul Hilton) who is in a relationship with the affluential Henry (John Benjamin Hickey). The story has modern themes – including the 2016 presidential election – while also speaking about the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s.

This heart-wrenching show will tear you apart and impress you with its ability to transform its minimalist set into many different scenes as well as using most of its actors in multiple roles. There’s also a heart-wrenching scene in the third act of Part II featuring the sole female character Margaret (Lois Smith).

Keep a lookout for some big wins during the Tony Awards because this show has 11 nominations.
