Creator John Cameron Mitchell told Toronto Star in 2014 that the title character in Hedwig and the Angry Inch is genderless and “more than a woman or a man…a gender of one and that is accidentally so beautiful.” Having developed a cult following over the years, Hedwig is a theatre experience like no other.

Performing adjacent to the theater of her ex-boyfriend Tommy Gnosis, Hedwig (Neil Patrick Harris) decides to share her own story of traveling to America during the height of tensions in Germany when the Berlin Wall stood tall. She talks of her meeting Tommy and how their relationship unraveled and led to an angry inch in between her legs. She performs alongside current husband Yitzhak (Lena Hall), a drag queen that Hedwig has forced to stay out of drag.

The 2014 Broadway production did spectacularly winning four Tony Awards, including ones for Harris and Hall as well as Best Revival of a Musical. The role of Hedwig was succeeded by many famous stars of different races and sexualities: Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, original star and creator Mitchell, Darren Criss and Taye Diggs.
