2009: Kanye West Steals Taylor Swift’s Moment
Other than the La La Land/Moonlight Best Picture mix-up at the Oscars in 2017, Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video at the 2009 VMAs has got to be the wildest moment in awards show history.
Swift was nominated for “You Belong with Me” against Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and when the country singer won, she was incredibly grateful. However, things soon took a turn for the worse when West stormed the stage to praise Beyoncé.
“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish,” he said. “But Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!”
The cameras cut to Beyoncé who watched in horror. Later in the night, she won for “Video of the Year” and invited Swift back onstage to have her moment. That moment inspired a feud that has gone on for years and Swift now has a picture of the moment framed with the handwritten caption, “Life is full of little interruptions.”
