Countdown to 2021 MTV VMAs: Best Moments of All Time

Let’s be real. No one really watches award shows to see who wins the awards, as it’s easy enough to just look up a list of winners the next day. What we do watch award shows for is the drama that you can only get when you put a lot of famous people in one room.

And there is no better award show that does this than the MTV Video Music Awards. Since its start in 1984, the awards show has given us some of the most retweetable and memeable moments that live on forever in our minds. You might not even realize some of these moments came from the VMAs, but without the show, we would not have them.

After a year of going virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the awards are back live this year from the Barclays Center in New York City with Doja Cat hosting. Justin Bieber leads the pack with seven nominations, and it will be a tough challenge for “Best New Artist” with six nominees that have dominated airplay this year: 24kGoldn, Giveon, The Kid Laroi, Olivia Rodrigo, Polo G and Saweetie (you can view a full list of nominees here).

But for now, we are taking a dive into the past to see some memorable moments from artists like Britney Spears, Kanye West and Taylor Swift. You might already be able to guess the moment that features the latter two artists.

Click through to see our favorite moments and do not forget to tune into the ceremony LIVE this Sunday, September 12th @ 8PM ET on MTV. Which moment is your favorite? Let us know by dropping a reaction or tweeting us at @celebsecrets.
